While playing golf yesterday at The Bear Trace course at Harrison Bay State Park (Hamilton County) I saw 5 Red-headed Woodpeckers. On the just past national bird count day (May 13), I saw (and continue to see daily) a Red-headed Woodpecker here at The Honors golf course. The reason I post this is because this was the first Red-headed Woodpecker I had seen here at The Honors Course in nearly two years. If the preliminary list I saw was complete, the one here was the only Red-headed Woodpecker reported in Hamilton county on the bird count day and no Red-headed Woodpeckers were reported by any birders in Nashville (Davidson County). As the five I saw yesterday shows, there are still areas that have Red-headed Woodpeckers but apparently their numbers and/or distribution has really declined in the last few years. Even though I did not have my binoculars and I can not hear the high pitches, below is a list of the birds I saw and/or heard at the golf course at Harrison Bay State Park yesterday while others were playing their shots.
