Thanks to Dan Jacobson and any others who encouraged visitors to sign the visitors list at Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge in Meigs Co. at Birchwood today. I was only there from 2 to 4:15 p.m. At least ninety-three visitors today raised thetotal visits since December 13 when the hooded crane was first noted at HWR toat least 2481. A tenth country, South Africa, was added to the list of countries from which observers have come to the refuge. Macklin Smith was the only person fortunate enough to see the hooded crane today when it flew across the viewing area in early morning. For the second straight day, no whooping cranes were observed. However, visitors did see several bald eagles, snow geese (white and blue phase), and thousands of active sandhill cranes. Charles Murray Birchwood, TN
