On the afternoon of Jan. 7, I observed a gull at Tims Ford Lake in Franklin Co. that was slightly bigger than a Ring-billed Gull with a back that was a shade of gray darker. It was standing on the edge of a mudflat with some Bonaparte's and Ring-billed Gulls. Range was not optimal. The things I kept coming back to were the size (a Ring-bill standing in front of it made that easier) and color of the bird in comparison to the Ring-bills. It stood out, but not like a sore thumb. There was some streaking on the nape. I could not make out any red within the dark ring on the bill due to distance. That would've sealed it. I had the opportunity to look at it for at least five minutes in pretty good light before it flushed and did not return. I'm 99% sure it was a California Gull. I wish one of the better birders I know had been there to help. If anyone is interested in trying to walk out in the mud and get closer, the location is in Winchester, behind what I think is the Bass Club, across from the City Park on N High Street.
