Hi Folks, sorry for the late reply, but I went out of town after birding on Friday and didn't have a chance to get on the net in between. On Friday, April 19 I and 2 other KTOS members did some morning birding inside Great Smoky Mountains National Park. We started at the Townsend Wye (Blount County) at 8 am and went to Schoolhouse Gap Trail, then the sewage lagoons at Cades Cove. Finishing about 12:15 pm, we tallied 53 species. Highlights included Harold Howell's TWENTIETH life bird in a week! Way to go Harold. For a "beginner" he's doing very well spotting birds and IDing by ear. We also had several first-of-year birds: a Chestnut-sided Warbler at the lagoons, Scarlett Tanagers at both Schoolhouse Gap Trail and the lagoons, and Eastern Kingbird at Cades Cove. Solitary Sandpiper, 4 Jake Turkeys and 4 pairs of Wood Ducks at the lagoons were nice to watch. We had 11 warbler species - almost all of which were seen at both the lagoons and the trail. Good day!
