HI folks,

Lots of bird activity around the NW corner of Great Smoky Mountains
National Park the last few days. Though most of our breeders arrived
prior to this week, it seems as though a train or two arrived between
Friday and yesterday.

Interesting birds that are passing through included a Least
Flycatcher near Schoolhouse Gap Trail and a Blackpoll Warbler
yesterday on the Falls Trail at Tremont.

A beautiful male Summer Tanager was nice enough to grace my yard
while I was recieving a haircut - you never know when a new yard bird
will appear! The good news is that despite my excitement, I still
have both ears.

My first Scarlett Tanager for the year in the park was over a week
ago, but this weekend it seems like every tree had one singing in it.
The same story applies to Acadian Flycatchers - first one, now many.

For the second year in a row, I heard my first Whip-poor-Will of the
year while hosting a Cinncinnatti High School group on a night hike
on Lumber Ridge above Tremont.

Though I've been seeing or hearing Indigo Buntings elsewhere, they
decided to all arrive at once in Walker Valley - I had 8 on the Falls
Trail yesterday.

After a brief lull, I am again hearing Ruffed Grouse all over the
place. I didn't hear a single one for 2-3 weeks, ending about a week
ago.

I haven't seen or heard any yet, but our Director reports an Eastern
Wood-pewee near Cades Cove a week ago.

If you're interested in helping the park monitor breeding
Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, there are 2 things you can do:

1) send me any reports you have of any sapsuckers during the months
of May or June, and/or

2) contact me about spending at least a half day hiking one of the
trails that are being monitored. Trails are being "signed out" so we
can spread our effort. This involves tape playback.

Good day!

charlie
