Aug. 9, 2003 Ensley Bottoms Shelby Co. TN When Hap Chambers, Roseanna Denton and I rode up on the first levee, there spread before us was one heck of a lot of birds. After a quick run around to get a handle on where the birds were concentrated my initial estimate was 8000 Wind Birds were present. After spending the day counting and watching a few hundred in the evening leave for points south while huge flocks went to roost, we totaled up the cards and ended up with 7627 birds tallied of the 15 species of Wind Birds present. Highlights were; huge number of Least Sandpipers, many first of year birds in juvenile plumage of Least, Semipalmated SP, Pectoral SP (only a very few), Lesser Yellowlegs, Stilt and a Wilson's Phalarope. Two Long-billed Dowitchers in ragged worn plumage were studied and a single Baird's and Western rounded out the goodies. Sitting and studying all the different sizes and plumage's in seemingly unending numbers was a treat for us all. Hopefully the winds that blew out of the North all day will drop more gifts for us to ponder tomorrow. Good Birding!!! Jeff R.
