Aug. 25, 2002 Ensley bottoms Shelby Co. TN The rain gauge at the Ensley Pits read 1-1/2 inches this morning after the torrential storm late Saturday but again Big Rain = Bird Shorebirds. The first big bird found was a wonderful male Avocet sweeping its way across the shallows. The Willet from Saturday was still present along with only one of the Black-bellied Plovers. Another addition to the list was 3 immature Short-billed Dowitchers. I got some nice photos of their Tiger Tertials. More goodies were found out in the fields with 5 Buff-breasted Sandpipers strutting their stuff. Another new one for the season was a Common Snipe, only the second I've seen this year. With the adult Bard's but no Sanderling the Ensley list for Sunday was a nice round 20 species of Wind Birds. A bird I failed to mention yesterday was a heavily molted adult Herring Gull that flew over us at TVA Lake early Saturday. An unusually early date for one around here. Good Birding!!! Jeff R.
