We have the same problem. Uusally when this happens we run winword.exe or
execl.exe with a /R.
If this doesn't work we restart the machine. We haven't found a total solution
yet. The office
programs loose their registration, but I don't know why.

Try putting a word doucment on your root drive and call it
something without spaces word.doc ie.
Then try to open it and see if it works.

Nothing in the event log.
The file association is fine because if I click on a word
doc or a Excel file the application starts. But does not
bring up the doc or xls it comes up blank. Then I hit file
and open the doc or the xls and it works fine.
