then you have definately lost touch with the datastore!
do an ODBC test on your dsn to dstore.. this will check for perms etc... then 
look at your database server itself.

I will give that a try - I can not also get into the management console, it 
tells me that the selected farm is not available.

Where am I going to check the connection to the datastore?

Justin,

I experienced this before when my Citrix servers had lost connection
with the datastore for more than 96 hours.  (I think this will show in
the event log).  In my particular situation, the NT username/password
used to connect to the SQL database had changed but I was unaware and
had not changed the settings on my Citrix servers.

I would verify you can connect to your datastore is up and that you
are able to connect to it with the account used by your citrix
servers.
