[THIN] OT: Network ip scanning

List I have an off topic question for you.

As part of our efforts to protect our LAN/WAN we are trying to work out a
way to detect what PC's are active on our network so we can determine if
they have AV and the latest Windows updates installed. We have had a lot of
problems with workstations infected with virus/worms/etc flooding our wan
links. Do other people have this problem and how do you detect problem
PC's.
