Briefcase was for Windows 98. In WIn2k and above you set up a drive mapped to a server location and set that drive for offline use. For example we take the users file location on the server and map it to the j: drive. Then we set the j: for offline use and then redirect their local my documents to that j: drive. So the use only needs to worry about working in my documents when they are in citrix or offline. With offline folders when the user logs of it checks all their files and makes a "local" cached copy for them. In other words their j: drive is still active offline as a virtual cached drive. If they change any files there when they log back into the network it updates the server copy and they are good to go. The only problem is that we want the laptop users to use citrix when in the office and only use their local programs when offline. The reason is that when online it pulls the documents form the server taking up bandwidth. The main issue that we finally resolved is what about their outlook. They needed it opened locally so that it would sync and be ready to go when they are offline. Since we use published apps what we did what have the user open their outlook - networked profile then min. it. Then they open their citirx program neighborhood and run all their programs for the day through there, including outlook. This way when they log off their local outlook is updated and since we redirect their citrix my documents to their server file location also their local cached copy is updated. One final note is that when setting up offline file sync you can set it up to run on idle and we set it to go when the laptop had been idle for 30 min.. This way if the user goes to lunch and leaves their laptop on it will do a sync then so the end of the day sync works. If so then there is file synch built right into Win2k and above. This is what we do when the user logs in and off the network. -----Original Message----- From: thin-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:thin-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Grant O'Connor Sent: Tuesday, June 15, 2004 11:13 PM To: thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [THIN] Mobility Solution Does anyone know of software that can synchronise files from a laptop to a file server? We have customers that use Citrix while at the office, but also need the flexibility of working offline and having data saved on their laptops. We are currently using an ftp utility to move files between customer sites and our network. I have had a look at Secure Access Manger, and that can synchronise mail to the fat client, but cannot sync files. If I enable client mapped drives it will increase our risk of viruses on the network. I have also had a look at RDPFTP, but it does not work with ICA. Any suggestions would be appreciated Regards, Grant O'Connor Senior Systems Engineer
