You were spot on - after updating the host file.  I highlighted the server, 
then removed it without any issues.  I was simply right click the server and 
trying earlier - Im surprised it made a difference but it obviously does...

Try two things.

1st click on the server in the CMC and you should get an hour glass. Let
it sit till the hourglass go away, (go get coffee, this could take a
bit). Once it times out (no more hour glass) then try the right click
and remove.

If that doesn't work add the Server to the Hosts file, and repeat 1st
step.
