You definitely can have servers on different subnets in the same zone.
Lately Citrix has actually been recommending single zones and as few zones
as possible, even with WAN connections.

I think the rule of thumb is that they must be connected by high speed
LAN/WAN. So if you have two subnets in your data center connected by high
speed connection you are fine. Or maybe even across town. If they are in
different geographic locations such as Dallas and Miami then it is best to
have different zones.
