This morning I got out in my patch for a bit, birding the Colorado River Nature Preserve on the north bank of the Colorado near the Montopolis Bridge in Austin. I tallied 22 species, but nothing new in the patch. It seems there are quite a few Tricolored Herons around central Texas these days, and I had 2 in view at once from the sandy bank at the end of the left fork of the main trail. In addition to the usual suspects, I had Prothonotary and Yellow Warblers, a Roadrunner, Bewick's & Carolina Wrens, a juvenile YC Night Heron, Great and Snowy Egrets. An oddity to me for my last several visits to this park and Roy Guerrero River Park on the south side of the river has been a complete lack of Caracaras. I don't think I've seen one in either park since about April. Today my only raptor was a single Turkey Vulture. As I post this here, I note that Susan had a Tricolored Heron at Warbler Woods today as well. I wonder if maybe the drought on the coast has them moving around more than usual these days.
