Dan: A week and a half ago, on August 24, I had an unusually high number of Tricolored Herons when I did the Mitchell Lake Audubon Center's 4th Saturday Bird Census-Tour. http://mitchelllake.audubon.org/ In specific they were concentrated in Basin 3 along its eastern shore from about 1 o'clock to 4:00 o'clock. http://mitchelllake.audubon.org/sites/default/files/documents/visitor_map_ju ly_2012_final.pdf I had the impression that Tricolors had nested there this year. In 2013 Crested Caracaras may be more common in northern Bexar County on the Edwards Plateau than they are at Mitchell Lake. This is base on sightings while in travel to Government Canyon State Natural Area, in NW Bexar County, and to Bulverde Rd & Evans Rd, where I work. Since I have not been to GCSNA for the past month and I have been on layoff for a few weeks.. Onward! I tallied 22 species, but nothing new in the patch. It seems there are quite a few Tricolored Herons around central Texas these days, and I had 2 in view at once from the sandy bank at the end of the left fork of the main trail. In addition to the usual suspects, I had Prothonotary and Yellow Warblers, a Roadrunner, Bewick's & Carolina Wrens, a juvenile YC Night Heron, Great and Snowy Egrets. An oddity to me for my last several visits to this park and Roy Guerrero River Park on the south side of the river has been a complete lack of Caracaras. I don't think I've seen one in either park since about April. Today my only raptor was a single Turkey Vulture. As I post this here, I note that Susan had a Tricolored Heron at Warbler Woods today as well. I wonder if maybe the drought on the coast has them moving around more than usual these days.
