I have been using ChipQuick for several years also. I do not do a lot of surface mount work but when I do for example replace components on the ctc177 chassis I use it. It really works great and is a must have. I bought it after a employee of mine tried to remove U 7401 in a 177 tuner and totally destroyed the traces on the pcb trying to pull the "desoldered" ic off of the board. I think I paid about fifteen dollars for it but it removed a lot of devices. There are a few tricks to working with surface mounts but they aren't as bad as you think if you use the correct tools. Although Marv still works part time to help another servicer out in Cape Cod, he still attends some of the service seminars in our area, where I have been known to give demonstrations in using his product for SMD removal for other servicers who have not tried it. I have made believers out of them! (and NO, I am not on Marv's sales staff, just trying to show everyone how easy it is to use - just takes a little practice to get use to it). Here is a link to the ChipQuik website (make sure to request a free sample). One of the reasons it is a little expensive is because it contains Indium but it does last quite a while and is well worth it. You can remove the old IC without destroying it. http://www.chipquik.com Bob Waterman, CET® #RI-28 Master Technician License #9109 Service Manager Gemini Computer, TV, & Security Alarms (508)695-7302 (508)695-7769 FAX geminitv@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx geminitv@xxxxxxx ----- Original Message ----- From: "Richard La Placa" <continentaltv@xxxxxxxxx> To: <techassist@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Saturday, November 16, 2002 7:14 PM Subject: [TechAssist] surface mount micro removal > > Hello all > > Does anybody have any tips as how to remove these new serface mount micros in the new philips chassis?
