Saying that fixed pixel displays show only half the picture is very
misleading, actually incorrect.  These displays have to convert 1080i to
720p, true, but 720p is not inherently inferior.  In fact, for broadcasts in
720p, one could make a good case for it being superior.  The debate over
720p and 1080i will go on, but it is clear that while 1080i has better
spatial resolution for low motion images, 720p is clearly superior in terms
of motion.  Remember, the p means progressive.  In the same time period,
1/60 sec, it is 1080i that is giving you only half of the picture because it
is interlaced.

The real problem with the fact that most of the fixed pixel displays are 720
(or 768) vertical is that the 1080i signals have to be scaled to 720 and
de-interlaced.  The artifacts of any scaling are going to be visible on any
but the best processors.  Similarly, CRT based sets don't display 720p and
have to scale that to 1080 and interlace it.
