Bruce You have to turn the "CLOSE CAPTIONING" off, it is in text mode and
disappears every time you access the menu or any on screen function. It will
contiue to occur until it is actually turned off. peter Kowalik

This looks like it might have PIP turned on some how. I ran demo mode and it
showed a large black box for PIP that could be set. I will get the original
remote and let you know. Unusual that I do get a few channels without the
black box.
