And with a router, the PC's are TOTALLY independent of one
another, one does not have to on for the other(s) to have net
access (and no software is needed).

Ed,
I use a hub. I use Earthlink DSL which allow up to three IP
addresses which mean
you can install there dial-up software, in this case WinPoet,
on each PC. This
way, each PC can connect using the same modem that is
connected to the HUB.
You can also purchase sharing software, in this case, the
gateway computer needs
to be on the Internet for the second PC to be able to surf.
Not all ISp's allow more than one IP address to connect.
The info I gave with assigning IP addresses and gateway is
ONLY so each computer
can recognize the other and share information.
