Thats sort of an insult! they must have figured they could not get anything
out of you.
Many years ago I met a sort of melancholy fellow at a party. He said he was
a tort attorney and made bundles of money for just going in to the office a
few hours a week and that he was bored stiff. If someone had a claim and
retained his firm, the legal assistants made a list of every last name that
could possibly be involved no matter how far fetched. They might come up
with 50 or 100 names. Then they checked to see who had insurance and who had
assets of significance. Then they sent a letter to everybody that they might
get something from informing them of the pending lawsuit. A few weeks later,
the checks come rolling in, a thousand here, a few thousand there, with
disclaimers that cashing the check constitutes a complete settlement. If his
client is satisfied with the loot, it ends there. If not, they actually file
suit (which costs a little more than just sending the letters) and more
settlement checks come in, and so on, towards an actual court case.
But he said that in the twenty some years that he had been doing this, none
of his cases ever actually got to court. Which he said was a good thing
because either he would have lost the case or the court costs would have
exceeded the award. And thats the game that is played.
