The broken prism will cause the symptom you described. It gets broken when people try to get the tape out from the jamup caused by the mode switch problems. I always change the mode switch on those after repairing the mechanical damage. If you just refurbish the switch it will fail again after a short time. They had the same problem with the next generation, which has a smaller mode switch. Now there is still a newer generation of mode switches from Funai. Too new to tell if they have gotten rid of the mode switch problems.
