Wow......is your age showing......
The who came out with Quadrophenia
Had an eight track of this growing up in high school...
And there was a switch on the quad receivers that would play the quad eight
track with a switch on it

This brings back a bit of a faint memory: maybe one of the others will
remember it better:

There was an enhanced 8-track format that gave you four separate
channels: kind of early surround sound. I can't remember the name,
quadratrac? (or did I just see an Audi ad?). Anyhow, the movement of the
head would make sense if it were in the "4 channel" mode. I don't
remember exactly how the units switched from normal two channel to four
channel, but I seem to remember an additional switch finger at the front
side or bottom front of the tape cartridge that would slip into the
"4-channel mode" slot to get it into the proper mode for the cartridge.

Check to see if you can see additional switches or fingers that may be
stuck or bent.

Harry,

Thanks for the input, and also thanks to Don, Leon, Peter, David and
Steve
for your responses. I'm going to have to do some more checking on this
unit
the first of the week. The original problem with the 8-track, was that it
wouldn't change tracks at all. I got the selenoid so that it now moves
the
head when you push the shaft to change tracks. I guess my question now
is
should the head be all the way up for track one, move down for track
two,
down more for track three and further down for track four? The head on
this
unit moves like this---track one the head moves up, track two head moves
down, track three head moves up, track four head moves down. Tracks
three
and four play fine, tracks one and two have no audio at all. If the head
wasn't moving to the right position for tracks one and two, wouldn't I
be
getting the audio from track three when it is in the first track and the
audio from track four when its in the second track? The reason I thought
it
might be the IC, I mentioned, is because I traced the audio with a audio
signal tracer off of the head to the input of one of the IC's you
mentioned.
When playing track three or four I have amplification coming out of the
IC.
When playing track one or two, I have the audio coming off of the head
going
into the other head amp IC, but no amplification coming out of the other
IC,
but that doesn't make sense, if you say they are front and back left and
front and back right head amp IC's. Sorry this explanation is so long,
I'll
let you know if I find the problem.
