Phil, Check the right side of the carriage and see that the pin actuating the door of the cassette you're loading is making good contact. Another possibility, depending on how far into the loading process it gets before ejecting, is one or both of the LEDs on either side of the carriage. The LEDs in that unit are VERY sensitive to light. The sound issue could be a combination of a worn bearing in the capstan and/or malfunctioning LED triggering the load process. Also, check the lower side of idler for a crack in the cone which is centered under the idler gear. This causes a loss of tension on the idler gear which results in idler not being able to engage the take-up reel table with proper tension. It's a common problem in these units and could be responsible for partial loading. Hope this helps.
