We have installed signals on lighting columns (LCs) on schemes for many years - and don't see any particular problems with this. If anything these days, when we are trying to make a conscious effort to improve the street-scene (or at least not to degrade it) as part of the design of traffic proposals, it makes even more sense to do this. Some comments and rules of thumb (if not exactly design rules):- - We would never place a signal on a LC unless the proposed locations are very close (within a few metres) - and it is almost always the LC that would need to move to the proposed location of the signal pole (with the agreement of the lighting designer for the scheme). - We use special double base-compartment LCs (where the signal connections and lighting connections are only accessible from the appropriate compartment) - and the LC is also to a higher spec (stronger cross-section) by comparison with normal LCs. The 8 holes (at the normal height for mounting signal heads) are pre-drilled. - The special LCs that we use have 3 gate holes (cable entry points) in the base - at 120 degree angles (watch out when aligning ducts up to LCs when using them as signal poles). We have a standard detail and manufacturer details if anyone is interested. Incidentally, we also try to amalgamate the design of signs on signal poles and LCs, where this is practicable and doesn't unreasonably affect the signal mounting, alignment, etc. (for example 'No entry' signs - with lighting units on the back of signal poles - at junctions with one-way streets). Again this can go some way to help reduce additional poles around junctions. We can think of all sorts of 'negative' reasons why we don't like the idea (compromise on pole positioning, mains isolation, weakening of columns by drilling etc.). Can I ask if anyone routinely does this nowadays, and what they see as the real problems/solutions?
