It could be the center pin as well.
I would r&r the box with a rebuilt unit from wolfgang or bus boys. The big
issue is getting it high enough or over a pit because the steering shaft comes
out with the box.

well i have begun the final welding on the inner lower front panel and the
sterring box will probably have to be removed inorder to do a few minor
touchups with the por 15, under coating, and the welder. I have decided that
while i have it out i ought to think about a rebuild.
i have a new drag link, new tie rod ends everywhere but still have play in
the steering wheel the final conclusion that i can draw from this is the
steering box. what should i look for in doing this? how difficult could this
be? should i be able to get needed parts at the local classic vw supply
shop?
