the center pin is fine, i've had teh wife steer while i was underneath, there isn't any loose movement there. when i get the inner panel welded to the frame wells i will check for play again, one thing i did notice is there was so much rust that the frame wasn't attached to the inner panel which works as a cross member for the front. long story short the frame rail wasn't supported and preventing movement. so every time you turned the wheel the frame rail would twist. that is probably the rest of the almost 4" of slack in the wheel.

The big issue is getting it high enough or over a pit because the steering shaft comes out with the box.Sent via BlackBerry from T-Mobile -----Original Message----- From: "Brian Denning" <i_am_cool_fred@xxxxxxxxxxx> Date: Tue, 08 May 2007 18:39:23 To:tcb@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [tcb] steering box rebuild well i have begun the final welding on the inner lower front panel and the sterring box will probably have to be removed inorder to do a few minortouchups with the por 15, under coating, and the welder. I have decided thatwhile i have it out i ought to think about a rebuild. i have a new drag link, new tie rod ends everywhere but still have play in the steering wheel the final conclusion that i can draw from this is thesteering box. what should i look for in doing this? how difficult could thisbe? should i be able to get needed parts at the local classic vw supply shop? _________________________________________________________________ Make every IM count.
