The difference is in the braking setup.  Thing drums use the late bug style shoes and hardware while the early Type 3 wide 5 drums use the wider  and larger Type 3 shoes, wheel cylinders and hardware.  The early type 3 drums therefore give you more braking power in the rear.  There's nothing wrong with running
the thing drums at the rear with the type 1 brakes especially since early Type 3 setups are getting harder to find.  Both setups will bolt onto long axle/long spline setups just fine with the correct spacers.

I think, in my case, Things and Type 3s are the same(?) I think I had the option of either. Let's all remember that I have a bug tranny and a swing or straight axle kit, sold by Steve at Wolfgang. Frankenbus. I like the conversion, but it can be a headache trying to remember all the pieces.

Regarding t3 drums, they are not mounted by the hub, but by two Allen screws. They are not compatable with a bus stub axle. Thing drums are likely what you are looking for.

That is exactly what you have Denis.  You definitely want the stud kit with any aftermarket wheel; and they are not a bad idea with stock wheels.  Much safer than the stock type lug bolts.

Fred:  Just do exactly what Denis has with wheels and studs.

That is what I have, isn't it Sammie? I have Type 3 drums in the rear and studs and lugnuts, no spacers. And Fred, if Sammie has wide 5 Empi's, that is what you want, isn't it? Mine are 15s, is that a problem?

Use the screw in studs and lug nuts.  Empi has them and almost everyone stocks them; like try Jack Wenk at Black Gold.  He can also fix you up with some Empi 5 spokes if that is what you want.

CIP offers extra long wheel bolts when using spacers, will these not work?

also you'll have to put studs in your drums for the wheels

CIP sells them. Like $18 each. Easy to find. I dont know much about splits, but on bays, the rear drums have ridges, and do not allow the wheel to lay flat on the hub. Spacer is only about 1/4" thick. Sounds like an awsome plan for the bus.

That is so cool! I've decided on the polished empi 5s and the stainless safari's. My goal is a two tone white and dove blue. So I need some kind of spacer for the rear wheels?
