This is certainly not my expertise and you are probably more knowable than 
I, but there are two different distributor caps for VWs a short cap and a 
tall cap. I once bought a tall cap by mistake for my 1600 and it ran like 
crap. perhaps you need the tall cap for the new electronic ignition.
