Your'e right Peter. Should have qualified that. Barndoor and through pressed
bumpers do go for more. However, so few of these things ever show up on the
market it's hard to tell what they are worth. Both the later 23s and 21 with
fresh correct restorations in my opinion are in the 40-45,000 range. Have seen
fairly recently some nice 21 windows asking like $40,000 and staying on the
market forever. Real point of the discussion is ridiculous prices paid at
these auctions. Original unrestored non-pop top SO-42 Westy (one owner
survivor car) sold last year at Pebble beach auction for $99,000. Friend does
Porsches. Had 2 speedsters, had them advertised about 2 years ago for $60,000
each, both nice fresh restorations, sold both. Speedster appearing no better
than those 2 from the pictures just went through BJ for $137,500. Also a 58 cab
Porsche went for $99,000. There is simply no way these cars are worth that in
that you can go buy them for much less. Last year a 56
oval convertible went through BJ for $52,000. At the same time there was an
identical car advertised on the Samba that was a Coop restoration and the
asking price was $26,000; exactly 1/2 of the BJ price. Don't use the auctions
like BJ to estimate values.

AND, as I said a couple of days ago on this list, don't get me started on BJ.

  Sammie,
When you say a 23w should go for around $45k, you need to qualify vintage and
options. For a '62-'63 vintage I agree with you. Go back to big bumpers and
bullets and they'll fetch more. Pressed bumper deluxes go for closer to $75k
and it's hard to say what a BD Deluxe would fetch if very well restored;
$115k+? When I was at Lennie's shop last Summer, he had just sold a '62 23w
done at his shop for $58k. A somewhat flawed restoration, in the opinion of
Kirk and I, of a '58 23w had an asking price of over $70k there. They aren't
going down, that's for sure!
