I stand corrected. Thank you Dan for clarifying that.

No. When you paste a folder into a folder which already contains that
folder, the folders will be "merged". No files or folders will be lost
unless they exist in both the copied folder and the existing folder, in
which case, the files in the clipboard will replace those in the
pre-existing folder.

For example:

You copy folder A to the clipboard. We'll now call this A (new).

You go to folder B which also contains a folder called A, which we'll call A
(new).

You paste folder A (new) into folder B.

Any files which exist In A (new) but which do not exist in A (old) will be
inserted into A (old).

All files which are in A (old) and which are not in A (new) will be left
alone.

If any files and folders exist in both A (new) and A (old) then the files in
A (old) will be replaced by those in A (new).

Just to reiterate. You will not lose any files in the folder which already
exists unless they also exist in the folder which you are pasting. This is a
fundamental aspect of Windows file management.

I, of course, made sure that the installation process would not wipe out
individual settings like playback configurations and folder preferences.

Hi JPR:
Indeed copying a folder on top of the other will replace the contents of the
target folder. Windows will prompt you with a message asking if you want to
replace the folder and all its content. Answering yes will replace the
folder totally. However, Dan was explaining copying files into a folder, and
in this case windows will prompt you to replace every file separately.
Answering yes to replace a file will proceed with the action, and no will
skip that file and continue copying the rest of the files.

Dear Dan,
I apologise. I was not aware of this function in Windows and I thought that
copying a folder stupidly replaced the old one.

  JPR,
As a precaution, I copied all the essential files I had, including
playback configurations, and custom feature sets. When I copied the
Sibelius 5 folder according to Dan's instructions, nothing appeared to be
destroyed. I'll have a clearer handle on things when I finish doing the
installation. However, for the moment, everything looks cool.
  K.

  Dear Dan,
my Sibelius software folder contains more items now. For example I set up
my
own playback configuration to use my midi gear instead of sound
essentials.
I did a few other things which would be too long to explain here but I was
only saying that instead of copying the folder itself, if you customise
things as I did, it may be a good idea to copy the contents of the new
Sibelius software folder to the existing folder on your computer in order
to
replace the previous plug-ins and menus and shortcuts. It seems things
like
playback configurations are saved in the same folder. If you are
interested
I can send you my Sibelius software folder so that you can see what it
  contains. Cheers, JPR http://myspace.com/jeanphilipperykiel

    JPR,

The only things which are changed through the Sibelius Software folder
are
the plug-ins and the keystrokes in Sibelius itself. You definitely need
to
    do this.

If you've added your own keystrokes then I'm afraid that you'll have to
  add
them yourself, but I don't suppose that you've added many.

The "preferences" that you mentioned will most likely refer to options
  that
you set in the preferences dialog, and these are mostly stored in
registry
keys. The only keys which are changed relate to tool windows and the
smoothing level of the score. These are options which you should
  definitely
accept because they make life much easier.

    Hope this helps,

    Dear all,
before installing this new version, there is something I really must
know.
If I copy the Sibelius software folder as it is, it will destroy
  everything
I modified or created in Sibelius preferences before installing this new
version. By looking at this folder, I could see that it contained only
two
items. I suppose it's okay to copy these two items in my already
existing
Sibelius software folder and thus preserving my preferences. But before
I
  do
this I would like to be really sure it won't brake anything.
