Heather,
Here's an excellent write-up from Alison, one of our list members, on using
a laptop layout. I'm using this without her permission, and sincerely hope
that she is still willing to talk to me.
Not all laptop keyboards are the same, and the labels which are printed on
the keys will vary from one language to the next. This description is for
British keyboards only, so you will have to replace the relevant characters
for those which appear on your own keyboard.
The numbers on the keypad are now the numbers on the number row. This
includes the 0, so to enter a rest, you must type a 0 on the number row.
There is no equivalent for the plus key on the keypad since this only
changes the keypad layout and you can do this with F8-F12.
The remaining five keys are all mathematical symbols and these have been
transferred to the main keyboard as follows:
The Equals key (also Enter) on the keypad is now the forward slash "/" on
the main keypad. This is the key immediately to the left of the right shift
key. The Decimal point (also the delete) on the keypad is now the period on
the main keyboard. This is the key immediately to the left of the forward
slash key.
The three keys on the top of the keypad (slash, star and minus) are now the
semi-colon, apostrophe and hash (number) keys on the main keyboard. These
are the three keys immediately to the left of the enter key.
To put this more artistically:
The top row of the keypad has been "transposed" to the three keys to the
left of the enter key and the two keys on the bottom row to the right of the
0 key have been transposed to the left of the right shift key.
Inputting notes as intervals on laptops.
You can still add intervals above the note but you need to use the
keystrokes for adding intervals below instead. I.E.: Shift+5 adds the note a
fifth above the selected note.
Unfortunately, there are no keystrokes for adding intervals below the note.
The work around is to add the interval above and then use Ctrl+Down to knock
the note into the right octave.
Also, I added two keystrokes to the laptop layout for inputting
appoggiaturas and acciaccaturas. These are Shift+Period and Shift+Slash.
These are the same as the desktop keystrokes except that you hold down Shift
as well.

Hi everyone,
Thanks so much for your help regarding the problem with sibelius. We have
reinstalled the programme and changed the settings to use with a laptop and
the plug ins is running correctly. Jaws is now reading the note names
properly which is good. However, the note length still cannot be changed.
Before, pressing 1,2,3 etc would change the note to a quaver, crochet, minim
etc but now they do not respond.
Any help would be great!

From what you're describing, it sounds like something is up with the
keyboard layouts. Both JAWS and Sibelius have there own keyboard layouts and
they need to match up. First, confirm the JAWS keyboard layout. If JAWS is
running from the system tray, open the context menu and choose Options >
Basics. If it is running in its own window, bring that window to the front
and from the menus choose Options > Basics. The keyboard layout should be
laptop or desktop. Change it, if necessary, and Make a note of which it is.
(Note that you can use the desktop layout on a laptop, but you'll need a
full-sized keyboard with a number pad to make it work.)
Now go to Sibelius and choose File > Preferences from the menus. In the
preferences dialog choose menus and shortcuts from the list of options on
the left. The command set should be set to Access Desktop or Access Laptop.
This needs to match the JAWS keyboard layout, so if JAWS is set to desktop,
choose Access Desktop, and if JAWS is set to Laptop, choose Access Laptop.
Close the preferences dialog and now try working in the score.

Hi,
I work with a year 10 boy who is new to using Sibelius access, but we are
having a few problems and wondered if anyone could help? These are the
problems;
. Note names not being read (Usually says A4, C4, etc) but now either is
silent or says a random number. This number is not 4th or 8th, etc but
something like 1 or 2.)
. Buttons to change length of note, i.e - to a quaver or crochet (F2,
F3, F4) are not changing it.
. JAWS says that the plug-in is not running correctly even though I
followed all previous steps of opening or closing windows.
