It should also be noted that ALL SI simulator companies monitor this list in one way or another, and I am sure that either positive or negative reactions to their tools or their support are noted and that may lead to actions that are positive to the entire community. jon -----Original Message----- From: si-list-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:si-list-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx]On Behalf Of Ray Anderson Sent: Wednesday, February 12, 2003 1:28 PM To: si-list@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [SI-LIST] Re: FW: Re: Question related to HFSS: Zpi, Zpv, Zvi difference fasig.jonathan@xxxxxxxx wrote: >Hmmm. Jonathan- I don't believe the thread was shut down, it's just that no one who knows the answer has responded yet. As far as the issue of whether it is alright to discuss technical issues related to specific tools on the list is concerned, in my opinion I don't see a problem with it. Prior to his posting his original message questioning the propriety of end running the vendor support engineers by appealing to the list readership, Charles asked me if it was an appropriate topic for the list. The following couple of paragraphs is/was my take on the topic: "You pose an interesting viewpoint, one that I haven't heard expressed before. I tend to disagree with your assertion that permitting people to post tool use questions is "unfair" to those who pay for support from the tool vendors. First, the level of support provided by tool vendors varies from truly first rate to truly dismal. In addition, I've noted that on the list a question can sometimes be answered within minutes. I've rarely seen that kind of response from vendor tool support people. I'm sure it happens (and it should), but I've not seen it. Also, consider that just about everyone (I would hope) is using a licensed copy of the various SI applications as opposed to pirated versions (modern licensing schemes help to enforce that). As such, the users of the tools could conceivably contact the vendor if they wished to. Another consideration is that with a large userbase available online to ask questions of, the enquirer can receive a number of alternative ways of doing something as opposed to the single opinion that might be received if you just asked the vendor's support guy. Conversely, one must realize that some of the answers one receives online may be worth what you payed for them (Caveat Emptor...) With so many users of tools on the list, if a particularly off-the-wall answer is given you can be pretty sure those really-in-the-know will chime in to set things straight. Anyway, that's my personal take on the topic, certainly not authorative!" -Ray Anderson ------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from si-list: si-list-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'unsubscribe' in the Subject field or to administer your membership from a web page, go to: //www.freelists.org/webpage/si-list For help: si-list-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'help' in the Subject field List archives are viewable at: //www.freelists.org/archives/si-list or at our remote archives: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/si-list/messages Old (prior to June 6, 2001) list archives are viewable at: http://www.qsl.net/wb6tpu ------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from si-list: si-list-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'unsubscribe' in the Subject field or to administer your membership from a web page, go to: //www.freelists.org/webpage/si-list For help: si-list-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'help' in the Subject field List archives are viewable at: //www.freelists.org/archives/si-list or at our remote archives: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/si-list/messages Old (prior to June 6, 2001) list archives are viewable at: http://www.qsl.net/wb6tpu
