Dear Sheila, thanks for asking!

Note I joined this list in February 2006

I joined because my GSD had died 4 months earlier, I was ready to
start looking for a young GSD to bring into my household, I knew I
wanted a pet GSD from American show lines, and I wanted access to
information and opinions that would help me do all this and take good
care of my new GSD.
Plus I mistakenly thought that there'd be less chit-chat and flaming
on this list than on the GSD-L one! (Hey, I was a member of GSD-L back
in 1997 when GSD-SHOW split off of it, in part because of the chat &
flaming ...)

Local: The local club, like most I suspect, seems to be (1) very
heavily geared towards those who show and do herding/obedience and (2)
needs members who will be active and will participate in the life and
work of the club. This is all fair, IMO. However, I am not interested
in breeding dogs or in herding with them*; I have some interest in
obedience, but realistically can't do it now. And I cannot participate
in the life and work of the club right now: I'm a single parent of a
third grader, plus I have a full-time research job, a house, a senior
dog, a teenaged dog, and two cats. I work hard to balance everyone's
needs and to give everyone the best life I can, but nobody/nothing gets
as much of my attention as he/she/it optimally should. There just is no
more of me left to give to the RMGSDC. I probably couldn't even make
the meetings they have, unless I brought my daughter with me.

Now, my church doesn't get as much of my time and work as it used to,
either, but that's different; I've been a member of the congregation for
over a decade, and of the denomination for my whole life, and I believe
the church needs to take the long view about the ebb and flow of giving
over a lifetime. (So do the pets and the kid and the house, for that
matter!) I'm not sure the local club needs to take that view,
especially from a newbie.

GSDCA: Not sure why I should, other than to allow it to have more
clout by having a bigger member count; more precisely, I'm not sure what
I can bring to it. (See previous paragraphs for details!) And, I have
no idea what benefit membership would bring to me, since I'm not
showing/working Indi.

*herding the dog to keep it from herding the cats is another thing entirely!

Margery Golant assigned herself to be my "sponsor" when I joined the
list; she was terrific about answering questions and putting some things
in perspective as I was looking for a new GSD.

Local and GSDCA: If you want us to join, tell us why. What can we
bring to you, besides our membership fees, especially if we're "only"
pet owners? What will you bring to us?

Local: What activities do you do that pet-owners can participate
in? Do you advertise them in advance? Are they always in one place at
one time, or do they move in time & space?
