Dear Sheila, thanks for asking! Note I joined this list in February 2006 On 9/10/06 8:26 AM, Sheila Lieberman wrote: > I would ask the newest member of this list the following, and please post > your answers so we can all read them....... > > Why did you join this list...... > I joined because my GSD had died 4 months earlier, I was ready to start looking for a young GSD to bring into my household, I knew I wanted a pet GSD from American show lines, and I wanted access to information and opinions that would help me do all this and take good care of my new GSD. Plus I mistakenly thought that there'd be less chit-chat and flaming on this list than on the GSD-L one! (Hey, I was a member of GSD-L back in 1997 when GSD-SHOW split off of it, in part because of the chat & flaming ...) > Have you joined a local regional club? > No. > Have you joined the GSDCA? > No. > If yes to either, why? And if no to either, again why? > Local: The local club, like most I suspect, seems to be (1) very heavily geared towards those who show and do herding/obedience and (2) needs members who will be active and will participate in the life and work of the club. This is all fair, IMO. However, I am not interested in breeding dogs or in herding with them*; I have some interest in obedience, but realistically can't do it now. And I cannot participate in the life and work of the club right now: I'm a single parent of a third grader, plus I have a full-time research job, a house, a senior dog, a teenaged dog, and two cats. I work hard to balance everyone's needs and to give everyone the best life I can, but nobody/nothing gets as much of my attention as he/she/it optimally should. There just is no more of me left to give to the RMGSDC. I probably couldn't even make the meetings they have, unless I brought my daughter with me. Now, my church doesn't get as much of my time and work as it used to, either, but that's different; I've been a member of the congregation for over a decade, and of the denomination for my whole life, and I believe the church needs to take the long view about the ebb and flow of giving over a lifetime. (So do the pets and the kid and the house, for that matter!) I'm not sure the local club needs to take that view, especially from a newbie. GSDCA: Not sure why I should, other than to allow it to have more clout by having a bigger member count; more precisely, I'm not sure what I can bring to it. (See previous paragraphs for details!) And, I have no idea what benefit membership would bring to me, since I'm not showing/working Indi. *herding the dog to keep it from herding the cats is another thing entirely! > Do you new listers have a mentor? What can we bring to you, besides our membership fees, especially if we're "only" pet owners? What will you bring to us? Local: What activities do you do that pet-owners can participate in? Do you advertise them in advance? Are they always in one place at one time, or do they move in time & space? -- Leslie M.
