I have NEVER found that to be true and I have kept/bred dogs that do not
carry the coat factor as well as those that do. In fact, when breeding
recessives I have gotten puppies with too long/silky outer coats (while not a
coat), so I think that is an old wive's tale Ken.
I won't throw a dog out who is a carrier, but I am not thrilled and a
glance at the dogs that I keep/show will show dogs w/ plenty of coat, even if
they are not carriers.

Dogs that carry the coat factor generally produce better coats so we would
use a dog with coat factor without hesitation. In all other countries they
are not allowed to use coats for breeding and they still exist. Using only
dogs that don't carry the coat factor will undoubtedly result in tighter,
less desirable coats.
