My first GSD with my husband was in kidney failure, he knew, but he was trying to hide it from me anyway. I found him at 3 in the morning unable to walk, I stayed with him until I could take him to the vet. He was a good dog. My Rottie was not ready, she was full of life even with cancer in her bones and lungs. She is in a great deal of pain, but hid it well. I was not going to wait for a broken bone, or the week or two she had before she could no longer breath, but she never showed illness until it was hard to treat, or in this case beyond too late. Kit never knew what was wrong. he has skin cancer. Every dog is different, and every person is different. But with the knees in a late middle aged dog, get a second opinion before doing anything else! sheila PAGAIRS@xxxxxxx wrote: In a message dated 11/1/2006 8:16:11 AM Central Standard Time, arelee_1020@xxxxxxxxxxx writes: I have had a dog look at me in a certain way, and I then knew it was time for that final decision. To me it is the final gift I can give to them for all they have given to me over the years. I have had good vets who have either come to my home or let me stay with them in his office, to pet them, talk to them and give them reassurance of your love for them, as they slip away. The dogs feel more comfortable with me being there I am sure. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ --------------------------------------------- Great post Beryl.... If you are not sure than dont do it...there are medications out there to help...I have always felt I had to try every alternative, medication etc. whatever it took before I could say I've done it all, its time. I have always told people...It has to be the right decision for you. I have a 12 yr old here with DM....my daughter keeps telling me to put her to sleep and I keep telling my daughter...no shes still fighting...she'll tell me when it time.
