Paul, forgive me as I am a newbie.....I thought long coats are not to be bred, they are not in acceptable standard. ????? Hi Kris... No...it's considered a fault of coat. Some people have actually finished long coat shepherds albeit with a snip, snip here and a snip, snip there. In our experience...long coated animals tend to be very good. In many instances...picks of the litter in intelligence...temperament...and motion. I know of breeders who have lists of prospective buyers who want long coats because of the reasons I've mentioned. In order to get long coats both sire and dam need to carry the gene. The only way to tell is to breed a dog you believe does not carry the coat factor to a coat. For example...our newest CH Molly's mother Sachet is a long coat. Bred to our stud dog Brando she has not produced a long coat either breeding. Brando has not produced a coat even bred to other bitches who have produced coats so it is obvious he does not carry that factor or gene. Hope that heps ya...
