I don't want to start a war on the subject but I would like to know from those
that do know, What is the importance of being the only club from the USA to
represent the GSD at the WUSV? Do those that show in the AKC ring only really
care?

Disclaimer: Personal Perspective, and thus suspect from the very beginning,
so don't believe me!
My daddy told me, when I took my first church that I would have one problem.
It would have different names and faces and they would paint all kinds of
distorted pictures, but at its core, it would always be a power struggle.
Does all this sound like a Junior High School social campus??? Does to me!
I am leaving Suzanne's post attached because I think it is essentially the
core of the matter. The following is my synopsis, which has no value except
to relieve my frustration in reading all the vast posts and scattered
emotions. Many will disagree with my synopsis!
1. GSDCA
GSDCA formed WDA as a means of members participating in schutzhund following
the AKC ban on bite work.
GSDCA was the only GSD club in America to have a seat on SV - for some time.
GSDCA and WDA got along fine or at least as good as a mother daughter
usually do - ???
2. USA
USA was an all breed schutzhund club.
USA decided it wanted world recognition and worked to get a seat on SV. They
did not oust GSDCA, but SV created a second seat for USA.
USA still wanted GSDCA out.
USA became a GSD club only
USA decided to also become a GSD registry in competition with AKC
USA set itself to be all things GSD - replacing AKC, GSDCA and WDA
USA changed their rules to exclude GSDCA-WDA participation forcing members
to choose between - one or the other.
3. WDA
WDA got along fine with GSDCA - like mother and daughter ???
WDA members participated in schutzhund in WDA trials and USA trials
WDA had more in common with USA and their common sport than with GSDCA, but
the organizational arrangement was fine.
PROBLEMS:
Then along came some personalities who decided to characterize the
relationships, that had served everyone fine to that point, as evil and
constrained and moved to merge the WDA and the USA. In doing so, some of the
leadership remained loyal to the GSDCA arrangement and were castigated as
evil people. There has to be enemies in a power struggle.
The end result is, the GSDCA is bad - because they have the SV seat and
communications to the SV go through the GSDCA (always have) for the WDA
which is, of course, part and parcel of GSDCA. But some of the WDA
leadership would like to exit the GSDCA and be on their own and communicate
directly.
Blame the GSDCA Board? For what? They are simply trying to maintain the
historic structure that has served everyone well to a point. But, as the
power struggle between USA and WDA heats up, USA points to GSDCA as the bad
guy - after all they hold the position that USA wants - sole seat on the SV
and national representative with the world union in America for the GSD.
CONCLUSION:
Nothing can stop the WDA from forming their own club and breaking away. We
cannot stop the USA from changing their structure and services to gain what
they want - domination of the American GSD before the world. What GSDCA has
been doing is holding the course and allowing others to work through their
own power struggles. Not too much else we can do. But, some in WDA and all
of USA would rather that GSDCA go away with a whimper and die of natural
causes. Who knows, that may be our destiny. All the other GSD organizations
have grown while we, with all the AKC breeds, are shrinking.
In the mean time, AKC has given a temporary trial period to evaluate working
dog trials through its member clubs, so, as I understand it, the GSDCA could
start holding trial schutzhund meets or something like that. This, of
course, is worrisome to some WDA leaders in that if this trial period
worked, they would be bypassed and the WDA would no longer be needed.
The GSDCA board however has chosen to affirm their relationship with the WDA
and to vote to continue to do those trials through the WDA.
So, the saga continues.
