A dog may not compete (and shouldn't be entered) in Novice if it has not won three classes in Novice, Am-Bred, Bred-by, or Open...other than puppy class. The rule book says nothing about 12-18 or the new Amateur Owner class, which I think is strange....AKC isn't keeping up to date with itself, obviously. You can win 30 puppy classes and still be eligible for Novice provided (a) you have no points (not one) or (b) you haven't won one of the classes mentioned above...and that applies only to wins prior to the closing of entries. If you are eligible for Novice when entries close, it's OK..you can win AFTER entries close, even get a major, and they can't keep you out of Novice.
