I understood this was about a young dog that was out of control with biting
and obvious bad behavior....and the fact that the dog was returned as being
overly aggressive due to biting its own owner and their daughter?
As I understood it the trainer responsible for teaching the owners how to
train this dog refused to allow ANY discipline...but only with 'treats' when
he behaved normally? Not even treats or praise for performing
obedience...but
for NOT misbehaving?
This was never about encouragement or perfectly performed obedience......?

we were taught by a well-known trainer of the day to observe - is the dog
confused by the command
(maybe you didn't give it right), does he just not know or understand, or is
he being deliberately
disobedient. The training/correction was according to the above.
If the dog just sat there and appeared confused, you need to be more clear
in showing what you want.
You don't correct a kid or animal for what they don't know. But if they
deliberately disobey, they
get a correction appropriate to the disobedience.
i.e. my dog would sit and I would go on the other side of the jump and act
like an idiot using
the motion to get him to jump and come etc. It was ineresting to see the
'lightbulb' come on and
he would jump at the appropriate time and hand signal or verbal command.
BUT if he deliberately went around the jump, he got a gentle correction and
put back in place and
no praise. If he decided to get up and go away to another place, the
correction was a bit stronger.
Anyway, it worked like a charm.
