I'm with you Kay!! One strong correction at the perfect time is without a
doubt the best way to train. I don't know how many times I've heard how great
my dogs are when they come out of the house and some workman has arrived
standing there with a shovel... their eyes are on me... and, when I say...
let's go... they don't even sniff him. I train each dog according to what they
need, but generally... how I've trained since 1979, still stands. [fancy we
both learned correctly the same year! :)

Subject: [ SHOWGSD-L ] Training the GSD

I guess I am of the old school of training but all this new style of
training just doesn't work in my opinion. I have been training dogs
since 1979. Started with my first GSD as she was my first big dog and
knew I had to do something. For many years I worked as an assistant
trainer for an extremely well-known obedience trainer and exhibitor
who has given seminars all over the US. She had the largest classes in
California . I have put lots of titles on my own dogs from UDs to
REs.I am giving this as my background as it means I have worked with
many different breeds. Yes, there are some breeds that can be trained
using all positive methods but not very many and actually I have never
seen this method work with GSDs or many other large breeds. And
training with a buckle collar on a large breed just does not work. And
I know this next statement will be controversial but I truly believe
that one good correction done properly with a pinch is much more
effective and humane than constantly yanking a choke or buckle collar.
In fact, there are many studies done by vets and chiropractor that
back this up and that this type of correction causes less injuries to
the dog's neck/spine.

I am now attending a class given by the local dog training club as the
person I previously trained with has retired from holding classes.
There are two Belgian Tervs in the class that only have buckle collars
on. The larger male is aggressive and constantly stares at my male
with the owner totally oblivious to the situation. Unfortunately the
trainer is unaware of the situation so finally I talked to her about
it and she did talk to the owner. The dog also breaks his sit/down
stays and runs amuck on recalls. The owner just goes to the dog and
puts him back to where he should be with no correction. This has been
going on for months with no improve. Unfortunately I think the trainer
does not want to alienate any of the students so puts up with this. I
on the other hand would love to give this dog a strong correction and
not with a buckle collar!

This said, I do use a lot of positive training and do use lots of food
treats/praise for motivation and initial training. But if a dog shows
any signs of aggression towards dogs or people, I do not distract the
dog and use food! Or if they break a sit or down and I know that they
know the command, they do get a physical correction.

It has worked for me for many years and guess what, my dogs love me,
have lots of spirit and are happy dogs as they know I am the leader of
the pack.
