In the past I have been blessed with a stud dog that will only breed a bitch
when she is absolutely ready, not before or after and we do get the bitch
pregnant. But when you don't seem to have this animal, is there a method of
training a young male to become an accomplished stud dog or does it have

Absolutely.
The first time, you make sure the bitch is absolutely ready (w/ no rings)
and he is given just a minute or two to tie, (NO fumbling around, NO playing,
NO
foreplay) and if he doesn't, he gets put AWAY. 20 minutes later, he gets
another chance. Same thing; no fumbling or he gets put away. It may take the
entire afternoon, but he learns to breed when you say "ready". (Because he
never knows if the gal is coming back!)
At some point, mine learn "wait" and "off" too. Makes life easy.
If I have a youngster whose turn it isn't <G>, I allow them to watch quietly
as well.
