the standard may not have changed, but one would have to be blind not to see 
that the look of the AmericanÂ conformation dog has changed since the 50s and 
60s....and that is not necessarily a bad thing....Ed

It doesn't work today because few really good German dogs make their way to 
American 
soil. ï¿½In the 50s and 60s we had some great dogs imported, and they made 
their mark on 
the American dogs. ï¿½There are good dogs in Germany, but they stay in Germany. 
ï¿½Do not 
think for even one minute that American judges look for different conformation 
and 
movement than they did years ago. ï¿½The standard has not changed, and judges 
still aim 
for structure and temperament as described in that standard.

Does anyone know why GSDï¿½breeders stopped the German-American crosses they 
did 
years ago?ï¿½ I know even today a few breeders still do use this formulaï¿½but 
it still seems to make sense that it worked years ago why not today.ï¿½ I

than they did years ago but I am looking at it for health and temperament

bottlenecking when breeding the American GSD's.

intelligent breeder to predict with some degree of possibility what they

knowledge 
ofï¿½ what they have produced both good and bad. 

It is unfortunate but true, that no matter where you go, the only reliableï¿½ 
information you can have is what you yourself have observed.ï¿½ Noï¿½ country 
has a monopoly on honesty.ï¿½ You do not know what is in the rest ofï¿½ the 
litter from that great male from Germany, unless you yourself wereï¿½ there to 
see 
those not shown. 

Increasing the gene pool is more of a "feel good" thing, than an actualï¿½ 
boon to the breed.ï¿½ You have to understand that you get the good with theï¿½ 
bad.ï¿½ Or, you may get just the bad, and that can be a real problemï¿½ with 
our 
breed.
