It would be difficult to say we have two breeds, because we use almost identical standards and come from the same gene pool, so I am not sure how far to take this. But I do think we have taken the breed in two different directions based on our desired use and interpretation of the standard. It could all be brought together over time if that were to become the objective, but I do not see that ever becoming the objective. So, we are one breed, from one pool, or more exactly from two original dogs, so the breed is the same, it is the people who are different. I just do not see anyway that the people will ever merge the breed back into one dog, and if they did, we would not have our dog and they would not have theirs. For me it is simple â?? to each his own. Congratulations to all the good dogs and their dedicated owners. The problem comes when we want to bring in an American line and then compete in Schutzhund or visa versa. (Of course this is not permitted by the other system, so the question is moot). And I have seen a few import dogs that can compete in our conformation ring, but they seem to be an anomaly from their import lines and seldom reproduce that movement without being bred back into the American lines for a few generations, which of course, reinforces the theory that we have bred for separate purposes for so long that trying to get something for one purpose out of the other is a real long term program. So, maybe yes, â??almost two different breedsâ?? but not really. For sure two different purposes and interpretations of the standard. And I suppose I hold a general pessimism about our ever agreeing, at lest in my life time. And that doesnâ??t really concern me. We have good friends who have imports and are very active in UScA. I am happy for them and love their dogs. Unfortunately the graciousness only goes one way. But then, they are young enough to tilt with windmills and change the world. Me? I have far more dogs at the bridge than I will ever enjoy in my future here. I just want to go to some more dog shows and enjoy what I have.
