*My second wife just retired her black lab seeing eye guide dog after 8 years...her new dog, another black lab is making a few mistakes...I tell ya, if you ever get a chance to see these guide dogs work up close in person they are truly incredible...I will miss Woodson, her first dog, I haven't meet the new girl yet..FB* It happens, with the new dogs. These same dogs seem to hit their stride with a little time and patience. Some years ago I had to the disabled shared ride van service to not place me on the same routes as another passenger with his new guide dog, a young male labrador retriever. I felt badly about it, but I just couldn't have his service dog (program trained guide) scooching his way from behind us to under my bench seat to where my service dog was lying and getting in his face to "visit". His owner didn't know when it was happening, but it happened multiple times. (The dog was also balking physically at initially getting on the disabled van service with his partner too.) I know my GSD's thoughts on having an unfamiliar large male dog get in his immediate body space and in his face in that under seat tight space, while minding his own business working, and he really did not like it. (I imagine the two breeds might feel differently about this scenario, from the little I know about labs compared to GSDs, but maybe not.) The guide dog just seemed young & immature, kinda green, and having some moments of willfulness.
