[ SHOWGSD-L ] Responses to Updating the White GSD

I received several responses to my original post....thought I'd respond in one
reply......
From what I've read, back in the 1940's/1950's the Germans cooked up the term
"Fading color" to designate dogs of lighter colors with the allegation that
such fading colors and white are signs of degeneracy.
It was in the 1960's that we, (GSDCA), followed this allegation by DQ White
GSD's. Yes, other issues such as White would blend in with sheep was claimed.
(Grrr....Not all sheep are white....)
Someone disagreed with my original post.....claiming Whites were not DQ'd for
lack of knowledge. That they, the GSDCA, knew that White was not associated
with health problems. And, that the White GSD was DQ'd by the majority vote of
the membership because that is the way the members wanted it.
It sure would be nice to know WHY they wanted it..... what was the reason for
the GSDCA to DQ the White GSD?
Another objection brought up was......why change our Standard.... just to have
a bunch of people breed "rare colors".
Of coarse "rare colors" definitely should be DQ'd. But why a White GSD....a
White GSD is not a "rare colored" GSD.
Years ago a Black GSD with a stark white chest, from neck to bottom, became a
Champion.....he was sometimes referred to as being part of the breeder's famous
"x" litter. This is an example of where are Standard would have to be more
specific. OMG....could you picture the reverse....but our Updated standard
could DQ it.
Again, why was the White GSD DQ'd? WHY? Time to Update our Standard? Were the
White GSD's wrongfully DQ'd. If so, it's time to change.
I personally would not breed to a White because my Preference are the dark
blk/tans & blk colored.
