Some other breeds charge $2000 + for pups, and people with "German" lines charge that and more for pups. If you look on line, you can also find "King Shepherds" for $2000 +, so why should breeders with quality dogs charge less? For some reason alot of Shepherd people are just afraid to charge more. Considering the cost of OFA fees, stud fees, breeding tests, showing (which can easily get into thousands of dollars), training, feeding quality food, etc. I think breeders should charge atleast that. Pet stores sell pups for that and more. My last two litters I sold "pets" on Limited Reg for $1750, all sold before 8 weeks of age. I gave away two "show" pups on co-ownerships, and reduced a price for a "show" male since I knew the people would be a good pet AND show home. I only have pups on avg once a year (some time less) so its not like I have puppies year round, and I am definately not trying to live off my dogs considering the amount of showing, and training, and traveling I do with my dogs. My one girl who is now 7 1/2, had 3 litters and is now spayed, my other girl is 4 1/2 and has had one litter. Five years ago, I sold pets for $800, and I was told by another breeder in my area to raise my prices since they were getting #1200-$1500 back then, and they and other breeders were trying to get the price of pups in our area up. My next litter I did, and then raised it again when I heard some breeders were getting $2000 for pets in my area. When people called they did not even question my price. I had Champion titled and OFA certified parents, my dogs are part of my family,I do not breed often so the puppy buyers I came in contact felt my price was warranted since other breeders in my area were getting that even when they did not have titled parents and/or OFA certified parents. I think if breeders asked more, you would also have more breeders OFA Certifing and titling their dogs as well. Breeding is to improve your dog/line, and if you are doing that the price of pups will reflect that as well.
