Ann makes very good points. We sell our show prospects unless we need one
for the continuation of our breeding program. We have been asked to sell
older dogs..we have declined, not because we didn't think the show home
would be good, or the price wasn't right..it was again, just because we
needed the dog in our breeding program. I pro-rate the price of the puppy
based on age and potential. If you are willing to assume the risk of a
12-14 week sold puppy the price is less. If you would like for us to grow
it out until5- 6mos, teeth in, ears up, pre-lims done..then the price is
more..as it should be there is less risk involved. Two years ago we took a
chance on a novice show home. I sold a nice bitch, reasonably priced to a
gentleman in Utah. She was almost 5mos old when he got her as I wanted to
make certain there weren't any glitches in her development. He finished her
in short order and even put a major and points on her himself. Nothing like
success to get you hooked on the sport! We sold him a second dog with a
major...he finished that one rather quickly also..two dogs finished in
18mos. On the flip side I know quite a few breeders/handlers that sell
EVERYTHING as show quality. They get the money.Their mantra is".if it
doesn't turn out..big deal..we will give them a replacement." Over the
years, we have had many inquiries from potential show homes..When I tell
them, great ones don't happen overnight..if you want the best you have to
be patient..they don't want to wait..when the mood hits them ..they want it
NOW.so they impulse buy and meet with disappointment after disappointment.I
have placed very good finishable dogs in pet homes because it was just too
much of a pain to try to find a good show home. I am ok with that, because
I know they have great homes and will be good ambassadors for the
breed.Christine

> Ann Marie, How many of your give away show puppies have finished or for
that matter how many have you bred and finished/? I evaluate my puppies at
8-10 weeks, sell the pets and keep the show quality puppies and grow them
out for 4 months or even older. before they are available.
$2000-2500 is a price of a good show puppy, pets sell for $750 on limited
registration. Almost every show puppy is for sale. Only once in a while do
I not make one available and I am usually looking at future breeding stock
and it is not always the best I keep back. Several of my Best dogs have
been puppies I couldn't sell. Ch Inherit the Earth of Edan (96 BOB, 4
times in Top 10) was offered for $1000 at 4 months of age in the early
90's and the only interested buyer told me I was asking too much. Ch Good
to the Last Drop of Edan was on my website last fall for 2 months. I had
only one interested buyer and they bought elsewhere. This dog was Reserve
Futurity Dog from the Jr Class and
