I've often thought it would be a better use of resources to go back in time
to the days when the Post Office was located in a store (or tavern
depending!).

We know that economically the 2 biggest expenses that the Postal Service has
(since they don't pay taxes) is brick-and-mortar and retirement/disability
expenses, especially in smaller communities.

Why not put the Post Office in a local business like the corner gas
station/convenience store? The PO would pay the store for the space, there
already is a clerk there who's not too buy in these days of pay-at-the-pump,
so there are no personnel or retirement benefits. If PO boxes were added,
the store would get the revenue. They could sell stamps and everything is
so automated, buying a label to ship a package could be self-serve with a
credit card.

If the US Postal Service is an example of how the government can do
something better than the private sector, then that should be something to
consider.

Subject: [ SHOWGSD-L ] Re: POSTAL SERVICE

As someone who lives in the country and has watched our postal service
decline I'ld like to weigh in on this.
1. We now take packages a mile of so down the road to a store to be sent.
Why? The local post office is only open 8:00 to 4:00. We're at work
during those times.
2. We now pay most, if not all our bills online. Why? We were receiving
them so late it became impossible to get them back before they were
overdue. Once we began to pay online we became aware of how much easier
this was.
3, If we order something we try to have it delivered by UPS. They are
faster, and the packages arrive without damage, PLUS if the package won't
fit in the post office box we have to try and get someone else to pick it
up for us.
4. Since its almost impossible to get to the post office during thier
working hours we now buy stamps at Costco.
While I recognize the need for mail delivery, there has to be a better
way than the US Postal Service!! JMO, Sue T.
