I live in perhaps the hottest city in the San Francisco bay-area Brentwood 
CA., Stockton is perhaps hotter, but it's not really in the bayarea.....the 
first year we lived here was 2002...that next summer, 2003 we had temps of 112, 
113, for days at a time....my outside dogs ALL have large kennel runs with 
large 20 by 10 foot Garage/type shade awnings/coverings...I also have misters 
in all kennels!....it's quite pleasant.....the misters also chase away the few 
flys we have....few because I feed raw...noticed a big difference in my fly 
population...I currently have 4 dogs...before the day is over I may only have 
3.....animal control is quite impressed with my set-up....I also had a very 
nice set-up in the heat for my rabbits...but that's another story...lol...FB

Given the ongoing discussion re.outdoor dogs and rescue, bonding etc., I 
thought I'd use that discussion as a segue into another issue re. outdoor 
dogs... 

Today, at my house, the heat is brutal.  It is around 100 degrees in the shade 
with 50% humidity and a heat index of 117 degrees.  All my dogs live in the 
house, so I'm not worried about them.  However, a question for those of you 
who keep your dogs outside...  How do you keep your dogs cool in weather like 
this?  I'm not passing judgment;  I would really like to know. 


Here's what we did when we had two dogs who preferred to live outdoors (some of 
them do).  We gave the dogs access to the crawl space.  It was cool in the 
Summer and warm in the Winter.  First, we put down horse mats.  Then, we put 
a large x-pen over the mats and fastened it down.  Finally we put in a doggie 
door.  The dogs stayed very comfortable and loved this living arrangement. 


I'm curious about how folks keep their dogs cool, but I have another reason for 
asking...  In the near future, we intend to build a small kennel with 
indoor/outdoor runs.  Given the horrendous heat wave this Summer, we're 
thinking that we'll have to install a/c when the kennel is built.
