Well, I have to agree with you here.  The database, which actually meant
something, has now opened up from the fifty or so dogs who'se owners cared
enough to do the testing to HUNDREDS.  Not knocking all of you who actually do
hip and elbows and the temperament test but the CHIC was SUPPOSED to be a
breeder's referral database.  Although I would have preferred to see the DM
tests and other true genetic tests that do not change over time.  I really
expected more from the PC................<sigh>

Subject: [ SHOWGSD-L ] Opinion on the Lowering of the Requirements for OFA CHIC

I was so very sorry to get the e-mail from Tish regarding the downgrading of
the OFA CHIC, done at the request of the GSDCA.  I do not understand this at
all.  Shouldn't we be demanding the support of advanced health testing in our
breeding stock?  Shouldn't we be rewarding breeders who help to establish
these high standards?  IMHO, there should be more requirements, as science
develops more tests, markers, etc., not less.  Never less.

I found it odd that the GSDCA AOE award never demanded more in the way of
health testing, and now, I find it odd that the OFA has lowered the
requirements of the CHIC to the GSDCA AOE level.  Is that what influenced
Carmen to advocate, and recommend to the Board of the GSDCA, the downgrading of
the OFA CHIC requirements?

You breeders of the GSD have done such a fantastic job in lowering the
incidence of hip dysplasia, as well as improving temperament, over the past 30
years.  Why step backwards now; why stop improving now?  There are many
health issues we NEED to overcome, not just hip, elbows, heart,
thyroid......the list should be growing as we find new, more accurate ways to
test our breeding stock.

Breeding programs should NEVER step backwards.  JMHO

Paula,
